About a week ago, President Obama made a speech about how he was going to use an Executive Order to make some minor action toward immigration reform. In the speech President Obama said, "We are going to offer the following deal: If you have been in America for over 5 years, if you have children who are American citizens, (Or Legal Residents) if you register & then pass a criminal background check, & if you're willing to pay your fair share of taxes, you will be able to apply to stay in this country temporarily without fear of deportation. You can come out of the shadows, & get right with the law. That is what this deal is. Now, let's be clear about what it isn't. This law does not apply to anyone who has come to the country recently. It does not apply to anyone who might come to America illegally in the future. It does not grant citizenship, or the right to stay permanently, or offer the same benefits that citizens receive. Only congress can do that. All we are saying is that we're not going to deport you. I know some of the critics of this action call it amnesty, well it's not. Amnesty is the immigration system we have today, millions of people who live here without paying their taxes, or playing by the rules, while politicians use the issue to scare people & whip up votes at election time, & that's the real amnesty. Leaving this broken system the way it is."
Now to be perfectly honest, I don't think this executive action does very much at all, but it is a good start. Our country has always had the moral high ground of taking in immigrants. Lets not forget that the Statue Of Liberty is a symbol for our open principles proceeding immigration, it's even states on the statue itself, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" That is the honest & true American way.
